My mom has been telling stories her whole life. She began writing them in the early 80’s with encouragement from family, friends and her fellow writers, through the years. We grew up listening to her tell them and read to us, so it seemed logical to have her record a few for us. Mom blew us away in the recording studio at Blue Rock, in Wimberley, Texas, in 2019, so much so, that the plan changed course. My sister and I sat in the studio and learned about the amazing work that goes into a recording and I designed the jacket cover and wrote the introduction. With a lot of guidance, some serious conversation and talent from a mentor and musician friend, Billy Crockett, pictures from mom’s personal collection and the gifted art direction of Emily Shirley, EmileyShirley.com, this 4-disc CD set took shape. The beautiful music serving as “bookends” between each story, was written and played by Billy and he so sweetly wrote in the key of her voice after listening to each story. A call one August morning and a few days of long distance conversations and creativity led to The WhimsyBirds carefully placing the final letter on the cover of “A Very Blue Rock Christmas, Vol. 2”. They tell the story of Christmas at Blue Rock in a way only these WhimsyBirds can. Marching, leaping, maybe even using a ladder to place the iconic star atop the tree? And the famous chocolate chip cookies are in the mix as well..
It was my joy to work on this cover with my friends, Billy and Dodee Crockett, exchanging ideas and creating these illustrations with iconic staples from Christmas at Blue Rock.
